Emotion Through Cinematography
When studying my old poetry, I began to ponder the question of how I could express the themes within them using different mediums. I had never dabbled in the world of film, yet I decided that communicating my ideas through short films would be an interesting approach to this project. I dug into the research by studying films that had inspired me and used elements of those films to make my end product substantial. I studied filmmakers and poets such as Josh Ovalle, Connor Franta, and Daniel Lissing. Taking my revised poetry, i set out in nature to capture short, 1 minute silent films that used various cinematographic skills to impact my viewers through visuals.

Analyzing my own poetry, I decided to revise element of the poems that would strengthen the poem. My goal with this was to strike emotion within the viewer to create an understanding of what the character was going through. With my research, I was able to become a much stronger poet than I would've been. I used a poem I admire by Connor Franta titled, Frames. This poem is strong line by line and gives you an overwhelming feeling of connection with the character due to the strength of the emotions conveyed. On the other hand, I also studied music. The song, Drown, by Tyler Joseph remains one of his most popular creations and if one were to read the lyrics, they would understand why. The lyrics form a tenacious string of emotional poetry that have left many listeners impacted by its effect. I used the techniques between these creators works to form substantial wording within my work that could hopefully reach the viewer in a way that they would not have expected.

For the film, titled Escape, I took the theme from my first poem and created a visual representation of that theme. Throughout the scenes, my goal was to capture the state of feeling overwhelmed and the avoidance of that feeling of which the character carried out. The character in this film experiences overwhelming negative thoughts and anxiety, when she lies down to dream rather than being forced to deal with it. In her slumber, she dreams of moments throughout her life where she felt genuine happiness and freedom from her emotions. Although, when she awakes from happier visions, she finds herself in the same dire situation as she once was in. The Film, Left Me Lonely, entails the theme of losing apart of yourself and feeling a sense of loneliness in the absence of it. The character can be seen wandering throughout a scene of nature alone attempting to mourn the loss and achieve a sense of peace after venturing out in nature. As the film continues, the character finds the she is incapable of setting free the negative energy that surrounds her due to the loss she has experienced.

Film #1: Escape
Basis Poem:
she tears herself away
to long destroyed places
sleeping in withered rooms
from her home of empty spaces
far from her grievances
she’s begging to find
a place as broken as she
much darker than her mind
to make the darkness
she dreams of leaving
look much less fearsome
than the home she was seeing
she tears herself away
to long destroyed places
sleeping in withered rooms
from her home of empty spaces
far from her grievances
she’s begging to find
a place as broken as she
much darker than her mind
to make the darkness
she dreams of leaving
look much less fearsome
than the home she was seeing
Film #2: Left Me Lonely
Basis Poem:
i could not foresee
the day of your demise
that you would leave me
and sorrow would fill my eyes
you only wanted
someone to notice
the way that you struggled
and provide you solace
i could not foresee
the day of your demise
that you would leave me
and sorrow would fill my eyes
you only wanted
someone to notice
the way that you struggled
and provide you solace
